NHS dentistry in Manchester: the 2024/25 figures

Few places have done this: Manchester delivered more NHS dentistry in 2024/25 (410,926 courses) than in 2019/20 (397,026), a rise of 3.5% while England fell 8.8%. Per head, that works out at 697 courses for every 1,000 people living in Manchester (11th of 36 places we compared), set against 795 in Bolton, 613 in Preston and 565 in Liverpool.

Neighbouring areas moved differently: Bolton gained 1.1%, Preston lost 17.1% and Liverpool lost 4.5% against 2019/20.

The work leans complex: band 3 courses (crowns, bridges, dentures) made up 4.8% of the total against 3.7% for England, which means more laboratory cost per course for a buyer to read into margins. Only 40.1% of courses were for paying adults (England 50.7%). With more exempt patients and children, more of a contract's value depends on NHS payments, and lenders will check delivery closely.

Patient access in Manchester

188,576 adults in Manchester saw an NHS dentist in the 24 months to 31 March 2025, 41.2% of adults and 1.4 points above England. That ranks 20th of 36; nearby, Bolton was at 48.8%, Preston was at 39.1% and Liverpool was at 37.9%.

84,833 children were seen in 12 months, 64.3% (7.4 points above England), 16th of 36 on this measure.

Access close to the national average means the target practice's own contract delivery and private income will drive the lending decision more than the local picture.

The Greater Manchester dental workforce

NHS Greater Manchester ICB had 1,619 dentists with NHS activity in 2024/25, 55.6 per 100,000 people (England 42.1), 8.1% more than in 2019/20. In the year 103 joined NHS work in the ICB and 107 left, a net loss of 4. For comparison, Lancashire and South Cumbria had 55.3 and Cheshire and Merseyside had 54.9 per 100,000. The same ICB also commissions dentistry in Bolton.

A thinner or shrinking workforce makes recruitment part of the lending case. Show who will deliver the contract after completion: associates already in post, notice periods, or a recruitment budget.

Practices in the M postcode area

The M postcode area had 146 sites delivering NHS dentistry in 2024/25, and half of them delivered at least 12,616 UDAs; the middle practice delivered 15,679 in Bolton (BL), 10,046 in Preston (PR) and 11,186 in Liverpool (L). That median ranks 9th of 36.

Big NHS books are the norm, so for most practices here the contract is what a buyer is paying for, and its delivery record is what a lender checks first.

Financing a Manchester practice

Most of a practice's price is goodwill, and lenders test it against figures like these for Manchester: contract delivery, patient mix and staffing. Our guide to buying a dental practice sets out the steps, and goodwill finance explains how that element is funded. Run the numbers with the practice purchase loan calculator; equipment often sits better on equipment finance than in the acquisition loan.

Premises, regulation and security

Buying a dental freehold in England brings Stamp Duty Land Tax at non-residential rates, and a lender secures the loan with a legal charge registered at HM Land Registry. For leased premises, expect a lender to ask for the lease and to match the loan term to it.

Dentists register with the General Dental Council and providers with the Care Quality Commission. A change of owner needs the CQC registration and the contract with Greater Manchester settled before completion.

Lenders for Manchester dental practices

Lenders for dental practices are not organised by region, so neither is our search: for Manchester, as anywhere, we search the whole market and approach the lenders whose criteria fit. Fees depend on the lender; nothing is payable upfront.
