How much NHS dentistry Liverpool delivers

The 287,555 NHS courses delivered in Liverpool during 2024/25 show a recovery under way: 6.6% more than the year before, though 4.5% fewer than in 2019/20, against a national gap of 8.8%. Per head, that works out at 565 courses for every 1,000 people living in Liverpool (30th of 36 places we compared), set against 613 in Preston, 795 in Bolton and 697 in Manchester.

Neighbouring areas moved differently: Preston lost 17.1%, Bolton gained 1.1% and Manchester gained 3.5% against 2019/20.

The work leans complex: band 3 courses (crowns, bridges, dentures) made up 5.1% of the total against 3.7% for England, which means more laboratory cost per course for a buyer to read into margins. Only 41.3% of courses were for paying adults (England 50.7%). With more exempt patients and children, more of a contract's value depends on NHS payments, and lenders will check delivery closely.

NHS access for Liverpool adults and children

155,761 adults in Liverpool saw an NHS dentist in the 24 months to 31 March 2025, 37.9% of adults and 1.9 points below England. That ranks 25th of 36; nearby, Preston was at 39.1%, Bolton was at 48.8% and Manchester was at 41.2%.

58,742 children were seen in 12 months, 60.1% (3.2 points above England), 21st of 36 on this measure.

Access close to the national average means the target practice's own contract delivery and private income will drive the lending decision more than the local picture.

Dentists in Cheshire and Merseyside

Liverpool draws on the Cheshire and Merseyside workforce: 1,400 NHS dentists in 2024/25, against 1,360 five years earlier. At 54.9 per 100,000 residents the ICB sits above England's 42.1, and with 101 joiners and 101 leavers the year ended level. For comparison, Lancashire and South Cumbria had 55.3 and Greater Manchester had 55.6 per 100,000.

A steady workforce helps a buyer's case, because associates deliver much of an NHS contract. Review associate agreements and notice periods before you offer.

Practices in the L postcode area

The L postcode area had 96 sites delivering NHS dentistry in 2024/25, and half of them delivered at least 11,186 UDAs; the middle practice delivered 10,046 in Preston (PR), 15,679 in Bolton (BL) and 12,616 in Manchester (M). That median ranks 16th of 36.

Big NHS books are the norm, so for most practices here the contract is what a buyer is paying for, and its delivery record is what a lender checks first.

Financing a Liverpool practice

Most of a practice's price is goodwill, and lenders test it against figures like these for Liverpool: contract delivery, patient mix and staffing. Our guide to buying a dental practice sets out the steps, and goodwill finance explains how that element is funded. Run the numbers with the practice purchase loan calculator; equipment often sits better on equipment finance than in the acquisition loan.

Premises, regulation and security

A dental freehold bought in England is subject to Stamp Duty Land Tax on non-residential rates. Any premises loan is secured by a legal charge registered with HM Land Registry. If the building is rented, lenders read the lease closely: a short unexpired term caps the loan term.

Dentists register with the General Dental Council and providers with the Care Quality Commission. A change of owner needs the CQC registration and the contract with Cheshire and Merseyside settled before completion.

Lenders for Liverpool dental practices

There is no Liverpool lender panel. Lenders that understand dental practices work across the country, so we search the whole market for each case. Fees depend on the lender and nothing is charged upfront.
